International business and finance magazine Financial Times in autumn has named the World’s 50 Safest Banks of 2013. The biggest bank in Northern Europe Nordea has once again been ranked as the 20th safest bank in the world.

Every half a year Global Finance selects the world’s 50 safest banks. The ranking is based on an evaluation of the long-term credit ratings from Moody’s, Standard & Poor’s and Fitch and the total assets of the 500 largest banks worldwide. The safest 10 banks in the world are all European, just as they were last year and the year before that. In some ways, Global Finance’s rankings of the world’s safest banks have changed little over the past two years. European banks predominate, accounting for a third of all banks listed in the top 50. North American banks account for about a quarter of the total, split equally between American and Canadian firms. Asian banks follow closely behind, leaving Australian, Middle Eastern and Chilean banks to occupy the remaining positions.
